It is also important to note that there are several Raja Maha Viharayas (Ancient temples recognized by Kings of the yore) that can serve as extension tours. These temples are the Mulkirigala Rajamaha Viharaya located 20km from the Ranna town, Kasagala Rajamaha Viharaya located 7 km from the Colombo-Tissa Road and Naigala Rajamaha Viharaya located 12 km also from the Colombo- Tissa Road. The community groups have been sensitized to this aspect as well.
Sites of scenic significance
Rekawa Kalapuwa and Bay - The lagoon is 11-16 sq km in area and is covered with thick mangrove vegetation. There is a sand bar at the mouth. Thick vegetation around and is the haunt of wild elephants and birds. Undisturbed environment.
Bay has a steep rocky beach with coral reefs. Visible signs of erosion due to coral plumbing for lime industry.
Current Ecotourism activities: A few tourist resorts mostly owned by foreigners have been setup. No other significant activities except turtle watching, sports fishing in the lagoon. Bay is suitable for scuba diving. The Rekawa Development Foundation (RDF) is setting up an interpretation center on the other side of the lagoon and has planned as series of eco-tour activities as part of the project.
Kalametiya - Is Located 213 km on the Colombo-Tissa Road and is 3.5 km seawards. A 2km stretch of coast adjacent to a lagoon extending up to the Southeastern point of Kalametiya Bay. Wide sandy beach lined by shady coconut grove. Sand beams. Thick vegetation of mangroves and other aquatic plants are found along with the usual coastal vegetation. Is the haunt of many migrant and local birds. and exotic fish including lobsters and coral. and is popular among holidaymakers.
Ussangoda/ Welipattanwila - Location is between 220-221 km on the Colombo-Tissa road and 1.5 km seaward from the turn-off.20 acres of flat, bare land about 18 m above sea level, Provides a panoramic view of the beach and the sea. Thick jungle is found northward and Lunama Kalapuwa on the west. Prehistoric site. (Refer section A for details of activities)
Godawaya - This is a picturesque area of lagoon and a riverine environment, with a magnificent panoramic view of the area from the temple on the hillock. Godawaya can be a significant visitation area and the community has planned a comprehensive project for conducting eco-tours.
